The Scale
Acrylic on canvas

Since synesthesia is a phenomenon that has accompanied me since I was born, I can see colors from different music notes. Here, I randomly picked and ordered eight out of eighty eight musical notes on pianos (the title is the scale shown above), and found out each colors associated with each musical notes according to my synesthesia (the painting shown below). I want to let uncertainty be a part of my work and not let the work all be lead by my consciousness and subjectiveness. All the colors are animated by the tension between different sizes of squares and the random ordering of the colorful squares with which it is formed. By only using the interval between elements, I tried to create a color movement that can associate with the movement of music. I’m questioning the underlying truth and rules. The chance of this scale’s combination, the chance of the synesthesia reaction appearing to me: is there really an absolute randomness in the world?
